Behind the Scenes at the Texans

I attended the "Business of Sports" seminar at Reliant Stadium Saturday. The seminar was sponsored by the Houston Texans to showcase the business side of team sports and opportunities within the company. It was very interesting. The Texans run a first-class facility with first rate people. I was impressed. As part of the seminar, we also received a ticket to Sunday's game against the 49ers so it was a lot of fun! The Texans won the game. Go Texans!

Walston Running for Judge

Attorney W. Kent Walston announced today that he is running for Jefferson County Criminal District Court Judge. The announcement was made at the courthouse. The seat is being vacated by Judge John Stevens who has been nominated for U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.
Walston tells FRONT ROW that he's excited. "I have the unique experience of being a police officer, a prosecutor, and a defense lawyer. I’ve covered all the bases of law enforcement."

BEAUMONT) - W. Kent Walston has announced his candidacy for Criminal District Court Judge.

Walston, a life long resident of Jefferson County, served his country in the United States Navy before becoming a Port Arthur Police officer where he received several letters of commendation and served as a field training officer. After eight years as a police officer, Walston attended Lamar University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He then worked for the City of Nederland as the Assistant City Manager for five years, where he was in charge of an $11 million budget. Walston then attended Baylor University School of Law where he graduated with a Doctor’s Degree in Jurisprudence. As a lawyer, Walston served for 2 years as an Assistant District Attorney with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted a variety of crimes. Afterwards, he began a private practice in the areas of family and criminal defense law. Two years ago, Walston was appointed as a master to preside over mental health hearings in Jefferson County.

“I have worked my way through the criminal justice system from beginning to end,” said Walston. “I have the life experiences that cannot be taught in law school or experienced by working only as an attorney.”

In addition to his professional experience, Walston has also served in numerous leadership positions with civic organizations and a variety of public service opportunities. He is currently the Vice President of the Hughen Center for Disabled Children and the President of the Bob Hope Charter School. He is an active member of the Jefferson County Bar Association where he is on the Board of Directors for the Bar and Chairman of the Law Practice Assistance Committee. He also participates in the Pro Bono program to assist those who do not have the financial resources to hire an attorney. In August 2009, Walston was one of twenty lawyers throughout Texas to be selected by the State Bar of Texas to attend LeadershipSBOT 2010, a program which recognizes attorneys for their leadership abilities. He is also on the Lamar University advisory council for para-legal studies and is a frequent lecturer for the Bar Association.

Walston has the proven Experience, Leadership, and Integrity and is uniquely qualified for the position of Criminal District Court Judge of Jefferson County.

My Formative Roots

I was visiting my hometown of Baton Rouge recently and for some reason I felt compelled to take a picture of my elementary school or what was my elementary school. Wyandotte Elementary is located right across the street from my childhood home so it truly was a neighborhood school. The school was shut down years ago, but the building is still being used. I have fond memories of attending the school because that's where I met my all-time favorite teacher in the world, Ms. Barineaux. She used to take me and a small group of her favorite students on special field trips like to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. I think about her sometimes and wonder whatever happened to her. What is she doing now? I would love to see her again and thank her for her kindness and love.

Former NBA-All Star Bob Love will speak at Lamar

(Beaumont, Texas) Oct. 15, 2009 – As part of Lamar University’s Academic Lecture Series, Bob Love, former Chicago Bulls three-time NBA All-Star, will present a lecture on his motivational life story at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, in the University Theatre.
Love will also meet with Lamar students from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 in the University Theatre.
“The Academic Lecture Series, sponsored by the students of Lamar, gives the opportunity to bring people of national stature and particular academic interest to the campus to bring knowledge and insight to our community,” said Russ Schultz, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. “Mr. Love’s talk will present his experiences to overcome the challenge of stuttering to become a national spokesperson. This is an area of particular interest to the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, which is part of our college, because they study this challenge in both children and adults. Mr. Love brings us a success story that very well may help others.”
Bob Love grew up in near poverty, with 13 brothers and sisters in a small Louisiana town. He dreamed of being a professional basketball player and practiced with a coat hanger hoop nailed to the side of his grandmother’s door.
Love played for the Chicago Bulls and led the team in scoring from 1969 to 1976. He ranks third in Bulls history in points scored, behind Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. He was a three-time NBA All-Star, scoring 12,623 points during his career.
Despite his great success as an athlete, Love never had an endorsement deal. He was unable to speak because of a stuttering problem that had affected him since childhood. A career-ending injury left him earning minimum wage washing dishes until a speech therapist helped him learn to speak without stuttering.
In 1992, the Chicago Bulls hired Love as director of community relations. He speaks to groups on behalf of the Bulls and shares his life story. On Jan. 14, 1994, the Bulls retired his jersey.
“This is really quite a remarkable achievement and why we in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences are so excited to see Mr. Love come to campus,” said Alana Mantie-Kozlowski, assistant professor of speech and hearing sciences. “People who stutter often have had so many negative interactions across their lifetime that any kind of public speaking can be paralyzing. We see a lot of patients with fluency disorders in the clinic, and, hopefully, Mr. Love can serve as a possibility of a role model for them.”
The fall Academic Lecture is hosted by the College of Fine Arts and Communication and is paid for by student service fees. There is no admission fee for the lecture and the public is invited to attend.

Southern University Homecoming

I recently went home to Baton Rouge to attend homecoming at my alma mater, Southern University. It was a great time. I visited the mass communications department and met with alumni, students, and faculty. I ran into a lot of friends and former classmates who I had not seen in awhile. I tailgated and enjoyed some great food. Kudos to the Agriculture Center folks for the best jambalaya and ribs! I visited the new Fieldhouse which features a great weight room and spacious suites. It was a beautiful day on a beautiful campus with beautiful people. Some of the highlights of the game included: a man proposed to his girlfriend by holding a sign saying "Will you Marry Me?" on the track(she said yes) and the Army Parachute team members made a grand entrance on the field, but one of them missed and landed on the other side of the jumbotron! I guess it was a little too windy! By the way, we won the game. Go Jaguars!

LU Women's Empowerment Conference

Preparing young ladies for the future. That was the theme of Lamar University's Women's Empowerment Conference Saturday at the Student Setzer Center. A diverse group of speakers, myself included, shared their thoughts on careers, achieving balance in life, pampering yourself, breaking stereotypes, and getting fiscally fit. Some of the presenters included Pat Avery, Gwen Ambres, and Cheryl Black Fitzpatrick. Congrats to Antoinette Mays, Vernice Monroe and the rest of the crew for a great conference!

Hurricane Ike Housing Assistance

Beaumont – The South East Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) announced Thursday that residents in Southeast Texas that own their homes and still have storm related damages as a result of Hurricane Ike can apply for housing repair assistance by filling out a Hurricane Ike Housing Repair Assistance Intake Application. “This is the first step in getting the citizens of Southeast Texas, who still have damages, help that they desperately need”, said Shaun P. Davis, SETRPC Executive Director.

Approximately $51,000,000 will be available to address Ike home damage in Hardin, Jefferson and Orange Counties.

Application packets can be obtained two ways:

1) by visiting the SETRPC website located at www.setrpc.org and downloading a copy; or
2) by calling the Housing Repair Application Request Line at 409-923-7900 or
1-877-840-4945. (Calls will be accepted Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. A large volume of calls is expected so wait times may apply.)

If requesting an application packet by phone, callers will be asked to provide only their name, address and phone number. Once the information is obtained, they will receive an application packet by mail. Due to an expected high volume of requests, mailed applications may take up to 7 working days to be received.

Application packets will include the following: instruction sheet, frequently asked questions (FAQ) sheet and an application. Homeowners should fill out the paperwork to the best of their ability and refer to the instruction and/or FAQ sheet for questions. If questions still remain, applicants can call 409-923-7900.

Completed applications should be sent to the SETRPC. Submission information is included in the application packet. After applications have been received, reviewed and processed internally, applicants may be contacted by an SETRPC Staff Member to clarify or obtain any additional information that may be needed.

BISD Education Summit, Saturday, Oct. 10

The Beaumont Independent School District is hosting its second annual Education Summit on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be workshops for parents, student entertainment, state of the district address by Supt. Names of replacement for Woods, Stevens come out

With the formal nominations of Jefferson County Sheriff Mitch Woods and Jefferson County Criminal District Judge John Stevens recently, it's all but a done deal that they will get the jobs. Now the names of interested candidates to replace them are pardon the pun coming out of the woodwork. For sheriff, sources tell FRONT ROW, Deputy Chief Zena Stephens and Deputy Chief Ron Hobbs are exploring their options. For judge, FRONT ROW has learned that Attorney Langston Adams, Prosecutor Ramon Rodriguez, and Attorney Butch Hoffer may be considering it. Whoever runs, it'll make for a very interesting election next year.

Gospel Play Coming to Beaumont

Check out this inspiring gospel play "My mess into my Message" at Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church, 3765 Fannett Rd., in Beaumont. The play will be performed on Oct. 24 and 25. SETX Mavericks Have a New Female President/Owner

The SETX Mavericks new sole Owner Jerry Nelson announced at a news conference Tuesday that his daughter Candace Griffin is now the president and majority owner (he gave her 60 percent)of the team. It was one of many changes Nelson and Coach Steve Tucker discussed about the upcoming season. In addition to the new owners and new sponsors, the team has new players and a new attitude. Seems everyone is excited! "We're going to be the number one team in the country," Nelson said. He has every reason to believe that given the team won 25 straight games last year and the division championship. And the talent has gotten even better. Coach Tucker bragged "we have signed seven of the top 12 ABA players to play here next year."

Mitch Woods close to becoming U.S. Marshal

Jefferson County Sheriff Mitch Woods is a step closer to becoming the next U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas. The U.S. Marshal Services is a federal law enforcement agency that protects the federal courts and its personnel. It is the oldest law enforcement agency in the United States. He applied for the job in July and recently his name was submitted for it. Sheriff Woods tells FRONT ROW that the next step is to pass an FBI Background Check and receive Senate confirmation. Woods has been sheriff since 1996.
The position is appointed by the President of the United States. There are 94 U.S. Marshals, one in each federal judicial district. If Woods gets the job, he'll remain in Beaumont. The office is housed at the federal court building.
So who will replace Woods? Sources tell FRONT ROW that Deputy Chief Zena Stephens will be appointed interim sheriff until the election is held and that she plans to run for the office.

Robert Reid Running for JP Precinct 2

Citizens of Port Arthur residing in Precinct 2 will soon have a decision to make as local school administrator Robert Reid announces his candidacy for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 when Bob Morgan retires in December 2010.
Robert Reid will officially announce his candidacy at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, October 8 on the steps of the Jefferson County Sub Courthouse in Port Arthur.
Reid carries more than 20 years of experience in public education with roles an educator as well as in administration—12 of those years in the Port Arthur School District. He has been involved in the JP courts as he continues to improve the issue of truancy and the disciplinary problems within the Port Arthur schools. Reid also possess years of experience in controlling a budget and vows to maintain a safe and effective procedure concerning all operation aspects as Justice of the Peace.
“Judge Morgan is one of my main inspirations for seeking the office of Justice of the Peace,” says Reid. “Precinct 2 needs a leader with integrity, intelligence, empathy, sound judgment and solid Christian ethics just as Judge Morgan has. I have these personal qualities,” Reid continues.

Jack Pieper Back on the Radio

You can never get away from what you love. Radio Host Jack Pieper who worked at KLVI for 40 years then left to try his hand as a news anchor at KBTV 4 last fall is going back to his first love.
He will be part of the new team at the new Southeast Texas Radio Station, KSET-AM, which will broadcast soon. Pieper who is coming out of retirement will host a three-hour call-in show covering a variety of topics.
"A special thanks to those folks who urged me over the past year to get back on the air. The KSET 36 hour on-air countdown is almost here," Pieper said on Twitter.
He will be joined by Bill Clark of Bridge City who will bring back his popular "Sunday in the Country" program. The station will be managed by Lee Melton.

PAISD Hires Spokesperson

Kristyn Hunt, a Lamar University Instructor, has been hired as the new media specialist for Port Arthur ISD. She starts her new gig parttime on Oct. 12 until she finishes the semester. Kristyn is a fellow Southern University Alumni (GO Jags!) and a member of the Southeast Texas Association of Black Journalists. She is also a Port Arthur native and a member of Delta Sigma Theta. Congrats to Kristyn. We wish her much success!

Who will pick up where Allen Lee left off?

Allen Lee who was a controversial and outspoken community activist died Wednesday. He was 61. Officials say his health had been declining in the past few months and they believe he died of natural causes. I covered Lee when I was a reporter for KBMT Channel 12. He was always cordial to me and very supportive. I know that his tactics were sometimes aggressive, but I think we can all agree we need Allen Lees in the community. People who are not afraid to speak out and point out problems in this community and advocate on behalf of those who don't have a voice. Who will fill the void now? Who will fight for our rights? Lee's death leaves a void in the community. A community that is in dire need of an outspoken advocate. Below is the official Beaumont Police Department press release.

This morning at 5:45 a.m., a woman called 911 in reference to a sick call at a home in the 5000 block of Maddox. EMS arrived and determined that the husband of the caller was in grave condition. The male subject was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He has been identified as 61 year old Allen Lee of Beaumont.

Investigators at the scene and at the hospital observed several injuries to the body of Lee. Judge Jones pronounced Lee deceased and ordered an autopsy.

The autopsy on Mr. Lee was conducted this morning and the preliminary cause of death has been ruled as natural causes. Mr. Lee's health had been declining over the past several months.

Coach Bob Knight Coming to Beaumont

The Southeast Texas Mavericks will kickoff their new season with a reception and dinner featuring the legendary Coach Bob Knight as its guest speaker. The event will take place at Ford Arena on Monday, Nov. 16. The team had an exciting year last year and I'm sure it will be even more exciting this year.
