Someone once said that being a journalist is like having a front row seat to history. Well, I've been sitting in that seat for more than 15 years and I want to share the view with you. Front Row will keep you informed of what's really going on in your community and across the nation. Send news tips, pictures, or videos to michellemccalope@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you!

Happy Holidays!
I just want to take this time to say thanks for your support of my blog. I really appreciate your words of encouragement and the positive response I've received. For example, one visitor wrote "I love your blog. I find myself looking forward to the updates. Another said "I'm glad you're still in the area. There is a definite need for FRONT ROW." It's great that other people are enjoying it as much as I do! I really appreciate it and I don't take it for granted. So keep the comments coming(I love hearing from you) and feel free to pass it on to others. I ask for your continued support and I promise to keep you informed on what's really going on in Southeast Texas. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Giving Back
I recently participated in the Cathedral of Faith Angel Tree program where members signed up to purchase Christmas gifts for children whose parents are incarcerated. Well on Tuesday, I delivered my gift to my recipient--a wonderful family in Port Arthur. It really filled my heart with joy to be able to give back and brighten someone else's day. And it certainly makes me even more grateful for the blessings in my life. I love this time of the year! It's really a wonderful time of sharing and caring.

Angel Tree Brings Smiles
More than 120 children will have a much happier Christmas thanks to members of Cathedral of Faith Church in Beaumont. The church held its annual Angel Tree Program to distribute toys and clothing to children whose parents are incarcerated. Some of the children and their families were on hand to receive their gifts during a reception at the church on Sunday. The other gifts will be personally delivered to the children's homes. Members of the church signed up to sponsor a child. They received a list of the child's clothing size as well as what kind of toys they wanted for Christmas. The program has been in effect for 13 years. Kudos to Rev. Freddie Antoine and his wife, Margaret, as well as the other volunteers who helped to coordinate the program.

Local Boxer Going Pro, Needs Your Help
Mark Owens is a local boxer who is making his professional debut next year. A fundraiser was held at Goodfella's Wednesday night to assist him with the transition. Owens has been amatuer boxer for 10 years. He's a native of Beaumont. After serving in the U.S. Army, he moved back home to take care of his ailing parents and pursue his boxing career. The money is needed to help cover his training, travel, and equipment expenses. If you'd like to donate, you can send a check payable to Mark Owens to P.O. Box 21045, BMT, 77720 or call (432)638-2650.

A slew of colleagues, friends, constituents, and family members attended the luncheon which included quite a spread---ribs, chicken, brisket, cornbread dressing, seafood dressing, green beans, corn, dirty rice, potatoe salad, yams, and lots of desserts. The food was delicious! And it's always good to see everyone there!

Gubernatorial Candidate Visits SETX
Houston Mayor Bill White who recently announced he is running for Texas Governor was in town Saturday. The Texas Coalition of Black Democrats hosted the mayor during a luncheon at the Beaumont Club. A group of delegates from Dallas were also on hand. Mayor White is running as the democratic candidate. He'll likely face Republican Challengers Governor Rick Perry or Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the general election. "I need your help. This is going to be a fight," Mayor White told the small crowd that was gathered. "But I think Texas is worth fighting for."
Attendees included Rep. Joe Deshotel, Georgine Guillory, Jason Apodaca, Beverly Hatcher, Gilbert Adams, Jackie Savoy, Mayor Bill White's son, Will, and White's friend and former chief of staff Terence Fontaine.

Prairie View Wins SWAC Championship
My congratulations goes out to Prairie View students, staff, and alumni on the school's SWAC Championship this weekend. PV defeated Alabama A&M in Birmingham on Saturday. It's the first time the school has earned the title in 45 years. 45 years! That's a long time. It's quite a comeback story too. The team didn't have a winning season from 1976 to 2007. Now they're on top! Only in America! Congrats! Y'all deserve it!
