Genesis Beauty Salon sponsored a premier of Tyler Perry's "Colored Girls" Sunday afternoon at Hollywood Theaters and there was not an empty seat in sight. It was full of beautiful African American women from all age groups including myself. It was a beautiful sight to see. I really enjoyed the movie and I really enjoyed seeing it with the ladies! Christ's Debutantes Shine!

Twenty beautiful young ladies were presented Saturday night at the Class of 2010 Christ Debutantes Commencement Ball at the MCM Elegante Hotel. I was honored to serve as Mistress of Ceremony. The ladies completed a nine-month program in which they met weekly to learn how to be strong christian women as well as practical lessons on etiquette, career planning, and writing a business plan. The program is sponsored by Antioch Baptist Church. It is open to young ladies 14 to 17 years old. The debs were escorted by their fathers, stepfathers, godfathers, brothers, and uncle. They were crowned by their mothers and grandmothers. It was a beautiful ceremony. Congrats to the Debs, Lady Dorrie Adolph, and Minister Arlicia Albert. The Republicans swept the three Jefferson County-wide positions (JP, County Assessor, and Country Treasurer) which mirrored what happened across the country during Tuesday night's election. I was with the Democratic Party at the Ticket watching election returns and it became clear early on that it wasn't going to be their night. Oh well. There's always next time. Kudos to all candidates who ran good hard campaigns. You should all be proud!

Marie Osmond Shines in "Putting on the Pink"

Singer Marie Osmond put on a quite a show at the "Putting on the Pink" event in Beaumont Monday at the Julie Rogers Theatre. The event raises money for breast cancer screenings and education awareness. Marie looked fabulous! She's so skinny. She sang various songs and talked about the ups and downs of her 48-year career.
It was a wonderful event that included a survivors dinner at the Beaumont Civic Center and later the party moved to the Julie Rogers where we enjoyed Marie and a guest appearance by Steve Ford, son of Former President Gerald Ford. Steve talked about his mother and First Lady Betty Ford's fight with breast cancer. Afterwards, there was a reception and I got a chance to meet and take a picture with Marie who was very gracious. Kudos to the Gift of Life staff and committee members. You did a great job!

I felt like a college student all over again this weekend. I attended my college homecoming at Southern University in Baton Rouge. I enjoyed the parties and seeing old friends, but the highlight of the weekend was speaking to students in the public relations practices class on Friday. Anyone who knows me knows that I am passionate about helping aspiring journalists and public relations practitioners (that's me with the students in the third photo) so it was a real treat to share my expertise with the students. One of the students in the class sent me an email that said "I would definitely like to thank you for rendering your insight and wisdom on the industry. Everything you shared was informative and you certainly were encouraging." This is what makes it all worth it! I also had a chance to meet our new president, Dr. Ronald Mason,(second photo) and some of the national alumni officers(fifth photo from left Dennis Brown, national alumni president). It was a great weekend!

Community Celebrates Local Pastors

For eight years, Pastors Kennedy and Deanna Andrews of Harvest for Lost Souls Outreach Ministry (fourth photo, Pastor Kennedy, fourth from left and his wife Deanna and two kids are standing in front of him) have been working hard to make our community a better place. Their efforts and their subsequent impact have not gone unnoticed.
Recently, members of the church as well as community leaders came together to recognize their work. An appreciation banquet was held at the MCM Elegante Hotel. Former Dallas Cowboy Bill Bates (first photo) was the featured speaker. As part of the event, a football signed by Bates and other players was presented to the family of Reggie Garrett, the West Orange Stark football player who died recently after collapsing on the sidelines. Garrett's mother, father, aunts, and stepfather (second photo, Garrett's dad in middle and aunt, and fifth photo from left Garrett's aunt, mom, and stepfather) were on hand to accept the football during a very emotional moment. Garrett wanted to attend the University of Texas and play for the Dallas Cowboys. I emceed the event along with KFDM's Nicole Murray (third photo). Congratulations to Pastor Kennedy and Deanna. Keep up the good work!

"BRA-vo" Art Display

Intimate apparel was on display for a good cause. As part of the BRA-vo art exhibit opening recently at Lamar University, bras were decorated using various themes. The mission was to raise awareness of breast cancer during October which is breast cancer month. The bras were decorated by women in the Golden Triangle.

Cheerleaders and dancers performed while the standing-room only crowd watched or visited the various booths. The expo was held at the Bob Bowers Civic Center.

HBCU's Receive More than $6.8 Million in Aid

WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today announced that six schools in Louisiana received more than $6.8 million as a part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Institutional Aid Program.
“I have long supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities and fought to provide them with the resources they need to build up their facilities and academic programs,” said Sen. Landrieu. “Louisiana has a rich tradition of strong HBCUs. The funding awarded today will allow these schools to continue to grow, both physically and academically to provide a better education for their students.”
The purpose of the HBCU Program is to provide financial assistance to establish or strengthen academic resources, financial management, endowments and physical plants to enhance these academic institutions.
The following HBCUs that received grants from the U.S. Department of Education:
• Dillard University will receive $863,050
• Grambling State University will receive $1.2 million
• Southern University and A&M College will receive nearly $1.6 million
• Southern University at Shreveport will receive $946,102
• Southern University at New Orleans will receive $1 million
• Xavier University will receive more than $1.1 million

SETX Women Author Book of Advice

Beaumont, Texas – From mayors to homemakers, from leaders in business to leaders in areas of faith, women across Southeast Texas have taken part in the production and illustration of Just So You Know, a book of sage advice that a mother, or mother figure, would give to the younger woman in her life.
"Just So You Know- Spicy Wisdom for Young Christian Women" will make its debut in Beaumont at a reception and book-signing scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, 500 Main St. Among the contributing authors and photographic models participating in the event are: Becky Ames, Beaumont city mayor; Pat Avery, HR and communications manager; Shari Griffin, music teacher and children’s choir director; and Lindsay Clark, pastor and 2009 Mrs. Texas United States.
The book is the brainchild of Pamela Stovall and Karen Bourdier, women who are active both in the community and in their church. The two worked with a broad and diverse group of women from Southeast Texas and beyond, asking each to write an essay answering one important question: “What do you wish someone had told you when you were younger?”
The result is a small, hardcover book featuring 28 short, easy-to-read essays, all beautifully illustrated with Bourdier’s photography that features some of the authors as well as even more women and young girls from the Golden Triangle. The essays run the gamut, from pointed advice about how to dress and act in certain situations to thoughtful discussions about the attitudes needed to successfully navigate life.
All proceeds from the $20 purchase price will go to Sacred Covenant Ministries and will be used for the ministry’s efforts to strengthen families.

Knowledge is power was the theme of the NAACP Symposium held Saturday at Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church. And everyone who was present left empowered with lots of great information. A panel of attorneys including Terrence Holmes, Langston Adam, James Payne, and Melody Chappell as well as Judge Duce Jones and others addressed topics that included employment and labor law, racial profiling and wills and estate planning.

Black College graduates from Southern, Prairie View, Grambling, Jarvis Christian, and Alcorn wore their school colors and diplayed their pride at the HBCU Mixer Thursday night at D'Vine Wine in Beaumont. The attendees sampled various wines and enjoyed a barbecue dinner and of course talked a little trash about the upcoming football games. The mixer was sponsored by members of the HBCU Alumni Association. Its mission is to support Black Colleges and increase participation in the various alumni groups in the Golden Triangle.

LU Football is Back!

I attended Lamar University's first home football game Saturday in front of more than 16,000 fans. It was a very special night. We arrived early to tailgate and everybody was just so happy and so excited about the return of football after 21 years. Great food. Great people. Great turnout. Great stadium. I can't say enough about how beautiful the Provost Umphrey Stadium is. It's a real show piece for Southeast Texas. And the Cardinals won the game! Go Cardinals!

More than 350 people participated in the Beaumont Police Department's Second Annual 5K Run to Remember. The run included a diverse group of people, from the young to the old and various ethnicities.I had a great time! It was a great way to kickoff the weekend! We ran down Main street and in front of the federal courthouse and back. Afterwards, there was plenty of water and oranges for everyone! All proceeds raised will help fund the Beaumont Police Officer's Association.

I was at home in Baton Rouge this weekend hanging with the family for Labor Day. While I was there, I attended the live taping of "The Stump Mitchell Show." It was held at Changes Sports Bar and Restaurant at 3669 Government St (near Acadian Thruway). The show is hosted by Clarence Buggs, brother of legendary Journalist Ed Buggs, and produced by Todd Sterling. It was a great show! We had a really great time. The team played its first game in 21 years last Saturday against McNeese State University in Lake Charles, losing 30 to 27. The first home game is Saturday, Sept. 11 at the newly renovated Provost Umphrey Stadium. Head Coach Ray Woodard, alumni, supporters and cheerleaders were on hand to accept the proclamation.The mascot, Big Red, also made an appearance. New BISD Sports Complex Opens

Things ended with a bang at the dedication ceremony for the new $47 million dollar Carrol A. Butch Thomas Educational Support Center in Beaumont. Hundreds of students, parents, staff, community leaders, friends and family looked on as the ceremonies ended with a huge fireworks display and ribbon cutting. The new complex will host football and soccer games for Beaumont Independent School District's three high schools--West Brook, Central Medical Magnet, and Ozen. It will also include a natatorium. The inaugural game was Friday night between West Brook and Ozen. The facility is named in honor of BISD's Superintendent Dr. Carrol Thomas. "I am grateful, grateful, grateful," said Dr. Thomas as his mother, wife, two daughters, his son-in-laws and granddaughter looked on. A reception was held at the administration building after the ceremony. The 10,000 seat, state-of-the-art complex is a beautiful addition to Southeast Texas. I had a chance to tour the facility along with other media and it really is a great place. I think it will be a great asset to this community. As part of the ceremonies, BISD administrators, board members, students and staff talked about how excited they were to have such a wonderful new home. The former Secretary of Education Dr. Rod Paige was also on hand to enjoy the festivities. It was a very special night!

Lamar Celebrates Return of Football

A sea of red covered the Lamar University Montagne Center Sunday evening as players, coaches, adminstrators, family, and friends celebrated the return of football. Lamar will play its first football game in more than 20 years on Saturday at McNeese State University in Lake Charles. The banquet was held to honor past players, those responsible for bringing the program back to life, and to celebrate the future. "There's not a day that goes by that I haven't been asked 'when are you going to bring back football?," said Lamar University President Dr. Jimmy Simmons. "We wanted to wait until we could do it right." A silent and live auction was held. During the event, Walter Umphrey donated two Dallas Cowboy football tickets in his private suite and transportation to the game on his private jet to the auction. The item sold for $11,000. No Evidence of Hit List, LNVA Says

After investigating racial complaints brought on by African American employees who alleged their names were on a hit list, the Lower Neches Valley Authority Board found there was no evidence of such a list so no action was taken. The board meeting was held Tuesday at LNVA's office in Beaumont. However, the board is recommending several steps to improve the office environment including offering sensitivity training. Earlier this month, longtime employee Lionel Briggs brought his concerns to the board saying he and other Black employees had been passed over for promotions for decades in favor of their white colleagues. Briggs also said his name was on a hit list created by General Manager Scott Hall and two of three men on the list had already been fired for demoted. Hall denied the allegations. But Briggs says the matter isn't over. He's exploring all of his options.

One of the many highlights of attending the National Association of Black Journalists convention in San Diego earlier this month was the opportunity to meet Neil on "Young and the Restless." The actor, Kristoff St. John is even more handsome in person. I also met his colleague Darius McCrary who used to play Eddie on "Family Matters." When I was a TV reporter people used to tell me that TV didn't do me justice meaning I looked better in person than on TV (they meant it as a compliment) and I tell you TV doesn't do either of these men justice. They are fine! I met the actors at the Arts and Entertainment awards reception to honor my former colleague Clarence Waldron, an editor at JET magazine. Clarence and I worked at the magazine in the early 90s. I'm very happy that his great feature-writing work has been recognized. Congrats Clarence or as I call him Henry Braselton!

"Sunday Best" Winner Performing at Cathedral

LeAndria Johnson who was recently crowned the winner of "Sunday Best," the gospel music competition on BET, will be performing in Beaumont on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Cathedral of Faith Church, 3755 Fannett Road. Johnson certainly has a testimony. She auditioned for the show the day after she lost her home to foreclosure and showed up at the audition with literally the clothes on her back. But she wowed the judges with her great voice and beat out the other contestants to win the competition. She also received more than two million votes from viewers. The 27-year-old single mother from Florida won a national recording contract so we'll be hearing a lot more from her. It should be a great show. Get your tickets now!

"Hit List" Charges at the LNVA

Things got a little heated at the Lower Neches Valley Authority (LNVA) Board meeting in Beaumont Wednesday afternoon after a longtime employee accused the organization of retaliation and having a "hit list". Lionel Briggs who has worked for the LNVA for 33 years told the board that he is working under hostile conditions and fear of retaliation. He says he fears for his job because he's been told his name is on a "hit list" to be fired and two other employees on the list have already been fired or demoted.
Briggs spoke during a hearing before a standing-room only crowd. He also had three other witnesses who were also African American employees testify to their own fears for their job and racial discrimination by General Manager Scott Hall who is white and was also present at the meeting. Hall denied that there was any kind of hit list. Emotions ran high after the board told the group that they couldn't do anything about a hit list because there was no evidence of a hit list. "This is ridiculous," Attorney Anne Bradley said. "Do you want to wait until he gets fired to do something about this?," said Camille Briggs. After hearing those comments and others, the board decided to take some time to investigate the matter further to find out what's really going on. Those in attendance included Camille Briggs, Attorney Anne Bradley, NAACP President Judge Paul Brown, Paul Jones, Eric Brisco, and Rodney Bushnell.

100 Black Women's Back to School Drive

The 100 plus Black Women Coalition of Beaumont will host its annual back-to-school supply drive on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the L. L. Melton Community Center (formerly L.L. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) held its annual convention in San Diego, California. I've been attending NABJ conventions for nearly 20 years and of course I didn't miss this one. I'd never been to San Diego before, but it was just as beautiful or even more beautiful than I'd been told. It was great convention. I always say that NABJ is like a family reunion, professional development, and a vacation all rolled into one. I fell in love with the organization ever since I attended my first convention in 1988. I still love NABJ!

There were two celebrations Saturday at The Grill in Beaumont involving local media. On one end of the restaurant, KBTV Channel 4's Marquel Sennet was celebrating a new job at her going-away party. She will be working in Shreveport. The party was hosted by Anchor Sheldra Brigham. At the other end, KBMT Channel 12's Meteorologist Ayna Sehgal was celebrating her birthday with colleagues and friends. Guests kept going back and forth from one celebration to the next. The smooth sounds of jazz and rhythm and blues filled the Procter Street Pavillion in Port Arthur this weekend as the third Annual Zachary Breaux Jazz Festival got underway. It was great show with Micheal Ward who is a fellow Southernite; Kyle Turner; Dana Jackson who did a great job, and Althea Renee along with several other performers. I reallly enjoyed the show. It was first class entertainment. The festival which took place on Friday and Saturday is named after the Port Arthur native who died trying to save a drowning stranger while on vacation with his family in Florida. The accomplished jazz musician was in his 30s. Congrats to Ms. Doris Hays and everyone involved in coordinating the event! Looking forward to next year!

Juneteenth Celebrations will take place in Port Arthur from Thursday, June 17 to Sunday, June 20. The festivities include a parade, a pageant, and programs featuring various guest speakers. On Friday, Gail Pellum, organizer of the festivities, and pageant participants Megan Miller and Erika Benjamin were interviewed live on KBMT channel 12's morning show by Molly O'Brien.
Juneteenth is named after the day that the last slaves were freed in Galveston. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to order the legal release of slaves with President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation took place on Jan. 1, 1863, almost two and half years earlier.
The events are sponsored by the African American Cultural Society. All events are free and open to the public.
“We just want to remember all those people who sacrificed so much for us to be where we are today,” says Gail Pellum, president of the African American Cultural Society. “We don’t want to take their dying for granted. And it’s even more important that we pass it on to the next generation so they know their history.”

Sigee wins Tax Assessor Democratic Nomination

In a special election held Thursday night, Thomas Sigee won the democratic nomination for Jefferson County Tax Assessor Collector. He defeated Interim Tax Assessor Collector Susie James by a vote of 25 to 18. Sigee's name will be placed on the November ballot. The election was conducted by the Democratic Party Executive Committee which is made up of precinct chairs to fill the unexpired term left vacant after longterm Collector Miriam Johnson resigned in March. Jefferson County Democratic Chairman Gilbert Adams supervised the process.
The election was held in the Jefferson County Commissioner's Court where a room full of family and friends gathered to show their support.
Sigee who works in the auditing office has been a county employee for 18 years. He is also a U.S. Army Sargeant. James who worked in the collectors' office for nearly 30 years was appointed to the interim position in April by county commissioners. Last year, the office collected more than $500 million in taxes countywide.

Channel 6 Anchor 'Arrested'

Channel 6 Anchor Nicole Murray was arrested Thursday and put in jail. The reason? It was all part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Lockup fundraiser. Murray was among dozens of business and community leaders who were arrested for having a "big heart", MDA officials say. Participants had to raise money to get themselves out of jail. The lockup was held at The Grill restaurant in Beaumont.

Former Essence Editor Susan L. Taylor and founder of the National Cares Mentoring Movement challenged students and adults alike to serve as "shining examples" to help fight against failing schools and overincarceration in our society. She called mentoring "the low-cost, high results way of saving the next generation." Taylor spoke about the importance of mentoring and gave life tips during the Youth Mentoring Workshop at the Holiday Inn in Port Arthur. The program was sponsored by the city of Port Arthur's legal department. More than 200 people attended including students from Thomas Edison Middle School, Stephen F. Austin Middle School, Woodrow Wilson School of Technology and Engineering and Memorial High School. The best-selling author also signed copies of her book,"All about Love". She empowered the youth telling them "you are more than enough" and encouraged them to stop comparing themselves to others. Instead, she says compare yourself to "your former self. Ask yourself 'am I better? Am I growing?'
I was the emcee for the program and I really enjoyed it. I had a chance to spend some time with Ms. Taylor afterwards and it was really nice. I think she's fabulous!I took her to run some errands. National Black Book Festival in Houston

I recently attended the National Black Book Festival in Houston. It was a wonderful event featuring self-published authors as well as other authors who have been published by major companies. It also featured an exhibit hall where authors could talk about and showcase their books and seminars on marketing your book and bringing out the book in you. The event was held in Houston at the Crown Plaza downtown. Authors in attendance included Reshonda Tate Billingsley, Brenda Jackson, Tracy Brown, and Carl Weber. I also ran into my friend Author DeMonica Gladney of "Willing to Wait." I would certainly check it out again!

Two Longtime County Employees Vying for Tax Assessor Collector

Thomas Sigee, a county employee and retired U.S. Army Sargeant, and Susie James, the interim Tax Assessor Collector, are running for the position of Jefferson County Tax Assessor Collector. Former Longtime Tax Assessor Collector Miriam Johnson retired in March, leaving an unexpired two-year term. The two longtime county employees spoke at the Press Club of Southeast Texas luncheon recently along with Jefferson County Democratic Chairman Gilbert Adams who explained the special election that will be held to fill the position permanently. On June 3, the Democratic Party Executive Committee which is made up of precinct chairs will choose the candidate whose name will be placed on the ballot for the democratic nomination. James has worked in the tax office for 29 years. She's served as deputy chief since 2006. She was appointed to the interim position by Jefferson County Commissioners. Morris’s successes are numerous in championing both change and improvements here at Port Arthur, including permitting numerous refinery expansions. He is also a respected and valuable leader in the local community, serving on several boards and other leadership positions. He was recently recognized for his contributions by having a city street named after him. Pink Shopping Card Kickoff

Dozens of volunteers gathered to help kickoff the annual Gift of Life Pink Shopping Card Campaign. Special guests included Marie and Donny Osmond. Each year, the campaign raises thousands of dollars for mammograms for those in need. Last year, the program provided 1600 free mammograms. The pink shopping card sells for $50, but offers 20 percent discount at more than 600 area merchants. The shopping card can be used from Oct. 21 thought November 7. As part of the annual fundraiser, there is also an evening set aside to celebrate breast cancer survivors and a program featuring a special guest.This year's guest is Marie Osmond who will be in Beaumont on Oct. 18. Currently, Taylor is the founder of the National Cares Mentoring Movement which is billed as the largest mentoring-recruitment effort in the nation.
Taylor served as the editor of Essence Magazine for 19 years and author of the popular column “In the Spirit” for 27 years. The best-selling author’s latest book is “All About Love: Favorite Selections from In the Spirit on Living Fearlessly.”

I recently served as the guest speaker at Central High School's Third Annual Mother Daughter Tea. The purpose of the event is to empower young ladies, and celebrate womanhood and the special bond between mothers and daughters. The theme was sugar and spice and everything nice. As part of my speech, I encouraged the crowd which included more than 200 people to move forward despite the fear, be persistent and don't take no for an answer, and set goals and pursue them. The tea is a really wonderful event. I always enjoy it. KBTV Fox 4's Marquel Sennet served as the emcee and the Central girls treated us to a dynamic fashion show! Kudos to Ms. Lambert, Ms. Hendrix and Ms. Rideau as well as the rest of the staff for having the vision for this event and for all of their hard work!

I attended Oprah's Live Your Best Life weekend in New York last week. It was a celebration of O magazine's 10th year anniversary. The weekend was fabulous. Some 6,000 women attended from all over the world including Hong Kong and Australia. There was a reception on Friday to pick up our packets. Oprah's BFF Gayle King welcomed us then walked through the crowd taking pictures. The next day, Oprah opened up the conference at the Jacob Javitz convention center. Then we heard from various speakers including Author Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat, Pray, and Love ("Our lives are a journey no one can take for us," Gilbert said); Financial Guru Suze Orman ("Debt is bondage. You have to get out of credit card debt"); Decorator Nate Berkus ("Your house should tell the story of who you are") and Life Coach Martha Beck ("Do something everyday that scares you and takes you toward your heart's desire"). Later that night, Oprah talked about her journey during an hour and half long presentation at Radio Music City Hall which is one of the most beautiful theaters I've ever seen. "Real courage is having what it takes to not give up on your dreams," Oprah said. The next morning we all participated in a 2.5 mile walkathon which ended in Times Square. Besides O, Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige also participated in the walk. It was really an experience of a lifetime being in the presence of Oprah! In fact, I saw her and Gayle on Friday night too when I went to see Denzel Washington on Broadway in the play Fences. I also ran into the Actress Debbie Allen. What a treat! The purpose of the conference was to empower women (and a few men) to find their path in life and be the best they can be! It's a message worth repeating again and again. P.S. I have a very special connection to O magazine. I wrote a story that appeared in the magazine. It's one of the highlights of my career!It was about a sketch artist for the Houston Police Department who was helping rape victims identify their perpetrators.

New SU Coach Receives Big Welcome

Southern University's New Head Football Coach and former Washington Redskins' Assistant Coach Stump Mitchell received a big Texas-sized welcome this weekend. First, the Golden Triangle Southern University Alumni Chapter (which I'm proud to say I'm president of) hosted a dinner for him and his coaching staff along with Athletic Director Greg Lafleur. We also welcomed Alumni Staff. The event took place at Madison's on Friday. The visit is part of a regional alumni tour to get folks excited about the upcoming football season and to raise money for a new football field. Our chapter presented a check to kickoff the fundraiser. This was followed by the HBCU Alumni Mixer which was attended by community leaders and graduates from the various Black colleges including Grambling, Jackson State, TSU, and Prairie View, just to name a few. The next day, the SU group attended the Houston Alumni chapter's annual Crawfish Boil and Fish Fry at Kitty Hollow Park. The event which I also attended is one the chapter's biggest fundraisers which draws hundreds of people. The weekend turned out great for alumni and coaching staff. We want Coach Mitchell to know that the Jaguar Nation is behind him 100 percent and we're looking forward to a great season!

This Friday, April 30th, the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) is organizing its annual region wide clean up event called the Southeast Texas Outdoor Spring Clean. Participating businesses will be recognized in advertisements following the event.

The King is still alive. Elvis performed at the Champagne and Ribs fundraiser Thursday night at Cowboy Harley-Davidson. In fact, there were several Elvis impersonators and they entertained the crowd. Hundreds showed up for one of the biggest and best parties of the year. The champagne flowed and the ribs were plentiful! The Babineaux family served as event chairs. The event raises funds for the Gift of Life Prostate Cancer program. 100 Black Men Celebrate Service To Others

At the 100 Black Men Banquet Friday, it was all about service to others and helping to make the community better. Members say that's what being a part of the organization means. The banquet was held friday at the MCM Elegante. It featured scholarship presentations to area high school students and special presentations by BISD Supt. Dr. Carrol Thomas on the state of the district and Regina Rogers' various programs, IEA Ben's Kids and the Gift of Life program. It also featured a keynote address from its national president Albert Dotson. Additionally, the group also presented a special award to Terry Williams, a vice president at H-E-B, for their support.

Links' Brunch is an Elegant Affair

It was quite the elegant affair as you would expect at the Golden Triangle Links' annual jazz brunch. The brunch was held Saturday at the Holiday Inn in Beaumont. Hundreds of fashionably dressed women and a few men attended the event which featured a great brunch spread and great entertainment. Those attending included Tracie Payne, Georgine Guillory, Chandra Pegues, Carla Allen, Hargie Savoy, Sondra Louis, Michelle Joseph, Nicole Murray, and Cheryl Black Fitzpatrick, just to name a few.

Bradley Wins JP Primary

The second time was the charm for Attorney Anne Bradley. She defeated Ben Collins in the runoff election for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 2 on Tuesday. Bradley received nearly 70 percent of the vote. She watched election returns with friends and supporters at home.But it's not over yet. Bradley faces Beaumont City Councilwoman Nancy Beaulieu in the general election in November. Bradley told her supporters her victory proves that "with hard work you can accomplish your dreams."
Meanwhile Tawana Cadien was elected Precinct No. 26 Chairman. She defeated Mary Kirkwood receiving nearly 86 percent of the vote.

BAABSE Showcases Talent

Ike and Tina Turner along with the Temptations and a host of other Motown greats made an appearance in Beaumont Friday at the Compro Event Center. Well not the actual singers, but their impersonators at the first annual Beaumont Area Alliance of Black School Educator's talent show. Educators performed songs and dances from Motown and other periods. All I can say is that Southeast Texas has a lot of talented folks. The performances were great and so was the event. Those participating included Joe Stevenson, Jessie Haynes, Camille Briggs, Thurman Bartie, Denise Spooner, and a host of others. Congrats to the committee on a great event!

Southern University Journalism Conference

Southern University Alumni and others participated in the journalism conference on Wednesday at the campus in Baton Rouge. The conference featured various workshops to teach students how to become successful in the broadcasting, print, and public relations field. I was among the presenters. It was fun to go back to my Alma Mater and share my experience. The students were great. I'm very proud of them. Congrats to the Mass Communications Department Chair Dr. Braima for all that he's doing to improve the department. Thanks to Assistant Professor Yolanda Campbell for coordinating the event. Go Jaguars!

Career Fair at West Orange-Stark HS

Professionals from various walks of life shared their strategies and tips for success during the West Orange-Stark High School Career Day Friday. I was among the professionals who talked with students along with Channel 6's Nicole Murray, Charles Maul, and others. The students asked great questions. The number one question being "how much do you make?" I always enjoy sharing my knowledge. It's my way of paying it forward for all the help and guidance that I've received along the way in my career and that I'm still getting. Kudos to the staff for coordinating this event!

SETXABJ/Cush Luncheon features R&B/Gospel Singer

Former R&B and Now Gospel Singer Regina Belle sang and spoke at the Cush/Southeast Texas Association of Black Journalists(SETXABJ) luncheon. The luncheon was held Thursday at the Holiday Inn on Walden. She encouraged the 300 attendees to never give up on their dreams, no matter how long it takes. The third annual event raises funds for scholarships and paid internships. Belle who sang one of my favorite songs "If I could" is now a pastor's wife and mother of five.
This is the third annual Cush/SETXABJ Luncheon. Every year Cush honors various leaders in the community. This year's honorees included Rev. John Adolph, Jackie Simien, Camille Briggs, and Shedrick Jenkins. Also two Lamar University students were given $500 scholarships.
I along with Gordon Williams founded the black journalists group in 2004 and I served as the first president for five years. Having chaired the luncheon for the past two years, it was nice to be a spectator. And it was really heartwarming to see the group continue to carry on the mission which is to support and promote Black journalists and raise scholarships for aspiring journalists. Good job everyone!

Annual BMT Jazz Fest Features Diverse Performers

Enjoy a night of Jazz + Blues under the stars at the 5th Annual City of Beaumont Jazz + Blues Fest in Downtown Beaumont on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
This year’s event includes two stages with ten bands for $8. Live performances by Grammy Nominated & Blues Award Winner John Lee Hooker, Jr., Barbara Lynn, Dean James, Jimmy Simmons, Shawn Pittman, Ashlynn Ivy, Rhett Butler, J.Sylvester, Lil Brian and the Remember When Orchestra. There will also be food and arts and crafts vendors.
The Beaumont Jazz + Blues Fest was established by the City of Beaumont and Southeast Texas Arts Council to promote the revitalization of historic downtown Beaumont and the arts. The event is paid for by grants and sponsors. Proceeds from the gate will benefit the Southeast Texas Arts Council.
Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames will present Barbara Lynn with the Dr. Raul Ornelas Lifetime Music Achievement Award. The award was named in honor of the Lamar University professor who was also an accomplished trumpet player and bass guitarist. He died in 2008.
Nearly 4,000 people are expected to attend this year’s festival.

Shred It & Forget It in Port Arthur

The Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas will host ”Shred It & Forget It” Saturday, April 10, from 10am to 1pm, at Central Mall as part of an effort to reduce identity theft. Since July 2006, seven events have successfully been held in Southeast Texas.

Shred-It will provide mobile shredding trucks for the one-day event. The BBB invites consumers to bring documents to be shredded for FREE, such as credit card statements, old checks, I.R.S. tax returns, and anything that lists personal information. Bring up to five (5) boxes per vehicle. (Box size is limited to a standard banker’s box, approximately 10 x 12 x 15 inches.)

The BBB stresses the importance to shred your confidential documents; when improperly disposed of, it can lead to identity theft. “Shred It and Forget It” is brought to you by Shred-It, MCT Credit Union, Bill Clark Pest Control, and Clear Channel Radio, with additional support from the Lamar University’s Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Beaumont Coca Cola Bottling Co., and Papa John’s Pizza. The event will be held at the Central Mall parking lot off Hwy 69 in Port Arthur between 10am and 1pm.
